HEALTH HAZARD ALERTCERTAIN BUCKWHEAT HONEY MAY CONTAIN CHLORAMPHENICOLOTTAWA, April 16, 2004 - The public warning issued on April 14, 2004 has been expanded to include additional information on product distribution. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers not to consume certain honey products described below because they may be contaminated with chloramphenicol.
The firms, Elias Honey Ltd., Prince George, British Columbia and Two EEs Farm Ltd., Surrey, British Columbia, are voluntarily recalling their affected products from the marketplace. These products have been distributed in British Columbia and Alberta. The presence of chloramphenicol in honey poses a risk (although small) of a serious blood disorder known as aplastic anaemia. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic drug which is not permitted for use in Canada in food producing animals, including bees. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall. The previous alert can be viewed at: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2004/20040414be.shtml For more information, consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342. 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. local time - Monday to Friday.
