Baked Beans Cost Retailer $1,000Singh Foods (1991) Ltd., Vancouver, BC, entered a guilty plea in the provincial court in Vancouver on February 18, 2004, to one count of violating the Food and Drugs Act. The company was fined $1,000 for unlawfully selling Heinz Baked Beans in tomato sauce, imported from England. In January 2003, the CFIA found and inspected a quantity of canned Heinz Baked Beans in tomato sauce, which were not packed in a standardized container and did not properly declare the fat and sodium contents. These products were subsequently detained and destroyed. Section 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act states: No person shall label, package, treat, process, sell or advertise any food in a manner that is false, misleading, or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, quantity, composition, merit or safety. - 30 - For more information, contact:
