Completed Investigations

The CFIA has completed investigations of 7 cases of BSE in Canadian cattle.


  • Case 1 was confirmed on May 20, 2003. The investigation is complete.
    • No meat from the animal entered into the human food supply.
    • The carcass was rendered and was excluded from the ruminant food chain in accordance with Canada’s feed ban.
    • All animals depopulated through the investigation tested negative for BSE.

  • Case 2 was confirmed on January 2, 2005. The investigation is complete.
    • No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed systems.
    • All animals depopulated through the investigation tested negative for BSE.

  • Case 3 was confirmed on January 11, 2005. The investigation is complete.
    • No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed systems.
    • All animals depopulated through the investigation tested negative for BSE.

  • Case 4 was confirmed on January 22, 2006. The investigation is complete.
    • No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed systems.
    • No additional cases of the disease were detected during the investigation.

  • Case 5 was confirmed on April 16, 2006. The investigation is complete.
    • No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed systems.
    • No additional cases of the disease were detected during the investigation.

  • Case 6 was confirmed on July 3, 2006. The investigation is complete.
    • No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed systems.
    • No additional cases of the disease were detected during the investigation.

  • Case 7 was confirmed on July 13, 2006. The investigation is complete.
    • No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed systems.
    • No additional cases of the disease were detected during the investigation.

  • A case of BSE was confirmed in Washington State on December 25, 2003. The investigation is complete.
    • The investigation determined that the cow was born on an Alberta farm.
    • All animals depopulated through the investigation tested negative for BSE.
