5.0 Quit Tips
When asked, top-of-mind, what tips
or advice they are aware of that might help someone quit smoking,
the largest proportion of adult Canadians mention will power or
cold turkey (29%). Smaller proportions mention medication/patch/
Nicoderm/Zyban/ stop smoking pill (14%), warn of health effects
(11%), speak to a doctor (9%), cut back gradually (5%), more education
(5%), something else/distract yourself (4%), have a plan (4%) and
avoid situations where you would normally smoke (4%). Forty-one
percent offer other tips or advice. Ten percent say there is no
way to help and eight percent offer no opinion.
Adult smokers are slightly more
likely than Canadian adults in general to say there is no way to
help.
When youth are asked what tips or
advice they are aware of that might help someone quit smoking, the
largest proportions mention medication/patch/ Nicoderm/Zyban/stop
smoking pill (23%) and warn of health effects (22%). Smaller proportions
mention will power or cold turkey (14%), chew gum/candy/ food/chew
on something (9%), speak to a doctor (5%), cut back gradually (5%),
support groups/counselling/associations/ family (5%) and Nicotine
gum/ Nicorette (5%). Thirty-one percent mention other tips or advice.
Seven percent say there is no way to help and 16 percent offer no
opinion.
Older youth, particularly those
aged 18 years, and youth smokers are more likely than others to
mention will power.
