Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sunbelkist' (Million Bells™ Terracotta)

Summary: The inner side of the corolla for 'Kakegawa S71' is orange brown to orange red with orange secondary colour in the area of transition to the corolla tube and along the midribs of the corolla lobes while for 'Sunbelkist', it is red with yellow orange secondary colour on all parts of the corolla. The main colour of the outer side of the corolla is orange for 'Kakegawa S71' while it is dark pink red for 'Sunbelkist'. 'Kakegawa S71' has shorter corolla tubes than 'Sunbelkist'.

Description: 'Kakegawa S71' is a Calibrachoa variety with upright to creeping plant growth habit. The plants are short and the shoots are medium in length with absent to very weak anthocyanin colouration. The shape of the leaf blade ranges from elliptic to obovate with an obtuse apex. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green and there is no variegation. There is no petiole.

The flowers produced by 'Kakegawa S71' are single type. Anthocyanin colouration of the sepals is absent. The degree of lobing of the corolla is weak. The flowers are orange brown to orange red with orange secondary colour in the area of transition to the corolla tube and along the midribs of the corolla lobes. The outer side of the corolla is mainly orange. The lobes of the corolla have a slightly cuspidate to rounded apex. The inner side of the corolla tube is yellow and conspicuousness of the veins within the corolla tube is strong.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kakegawa S71' originated from a hybridization conducted in February of 2000 in Kakegawa, Japan. The female parent was an unnamed breeding line with red orange flowers and semi-creeping plant growth habit and the male parent was variety 'Kakegawa S52' (Liricashower Coral Vein). In August of 2000, F1 seed was sown and eighty of the resulting seedlings were transplanted outdoors. One plant was selected for vegetative propagation based on its semi-creeping plant growth habit and light orange corolla with red orange mid-veins. In February of 2001, this selection was re-propagated vegetatively for evaluation in 9 cm hanging pots grown in greenhouse and open field trials. Using new vegetatively propagated plants, the selection was further evaluated in Salinas, California, USA. When it was determined that the characters were firmly fixed, the selection was named 'Kakegawa S71'.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Kakegawa S71' was conducted in a polyhouse at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. The trial included 15 plants of each variety grown in 10 cm pots. The plants were spaced 13 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
