National Memorial Service - Commanding Officer’s Communique

2005-03-23

The sudden and tragic loss of four members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in “K” Division on March 3, 2005, continues to have a profound impact. We may never be able to fully comprehend the act which took the lives of Constables Tony Gordon, Leo Johnston, Brock Myrol and Peter Schiemann.

To say that the initial news of this incident sent a shockwave through the RCMP family, and the broader police community, would be an understatement. The immediate offer of assistance to the RCMP in “K” Division will always be a source of comfort in knowing that all of you, wherever you serve, were there to support and assist us in whatever capacity was required.

I cannot say enough about the personnel who attended Alberta from Ottawa to assist us through a very difficult time. Your kindness and unending support in the planning of the very dignified National Memorial Service, and the funerals for our colleagues will not be forgotten.

The support and assistance we have received from the members of the Force in all Divisions, the broader police community in Canada and the United States, Emergency Services personnel, and members of the Canadian Armed Forces has been overwhelming. Whether through your letters and messages of condolences or your very public attendance at the funerals or the National Memorial Service of our fallen comrades, your presence has brought great comfort to all of us.

As I stated in my euology, I believe that the men and women who serve Canada either in law enforcement, or in our military, find themselves united in their intense desire to make this world a better place. This was also evident in the participation by our colleagues in Emergency Services. On looking back over the last several weeks, you have strengthened my belief.

On behalf of the families of Tony, Leo, Brock and Peter, and all employees of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to all of you for your prayers and acts of kindness.

W.M. Sweeney, A/Commr.
Commanding Officer “K” Division
