IM Competency Assessment Tool

Welcome

The Information Management Competency Assessment Tool is a pilot project of the Organizational Readiness Office. It has been designed to assist practitioners and managers in their professional development. The tool supports the Federal Government Management Accountability Framework and the Policy for Continuous Learning in the Public Service of Canada which includes a commitment that all employees who wish to have a personal learning plan will have an opportunity to develop one. It also encourages a global approach to Information Management.

The Information Management Competency Assessment Tool is based on behavioural and technical competencies for information management in the federal public service. This competency-based approach helps ensure consistency in addressing strategic human-resource management issues across government. The assessment tool allows you to create a personal profile based on the behavioural and technical IM Competencies.

  1. Visioning
  2. Client Service Orientation
  3. Communication
  4. Influencing
  5. Teamwork and Partnership
  6. Creative Problem Solving
  7. Planning and Organizing for Results
  8. Technical Competencies

Once you have completed your assessment, you can use this information to discuss with your manager learning options that will improve or develop these competencies.

If your department or agency has already adopted a competency-based approach to human resource management, you may wish to consult your departmental intranet for information about competency assessment processes and profiles specific to your organization. This assessment tool is a guide only, one of many development tools available to you.

You are under no obligation to share your personal competency profile, however, it can be useful information when discussing your personal learning plan, with your supervisor. Such discussions will clarify any differences between your self-assessment of your training needs and that of your supervisor.

Please direct any questions about how to use this Tool to Thomas.Walters@pwgsc.gc.ca.
