What's in It for an Intern?
No Experience Needed!
The Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program can provide you with a paid
internship from 6 to 10 months within the federal government. This Program gives you the
tools to break the vicious cycle of "no job, no experience; no experience, no
job". You can get real experience and develop your work skills.
A Mentor to Guide you
Throughout the period of the internship, you will receive support from a mentor who
has volunteered to participate in the Program and who will be your coach and guide.
To be Eligible for the Program, you Must:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age
- be entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizen or permanent resident)
- be unemployed or underemployed
- no longer attend school full time
- not have previously participated in the Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program or another internship program under the federal government's Youth Employment Strategy.
The following persons are NOT eligible for the Program:
- persons awaiting permanent resident status;
- persons holding only temporary work permits.
Employer
Interns hired under the Federal Public Sector Youth
Internship Program are not federal employees. The YMCA is the
legal employer of all interns placed in federal public sector
worksites for the duration of the internship.
Pay and Length of Internships
All interns are paid directly by the YMCA.
The pay and the length of the internships vary by level of education:
- Young people who don't have a high school diploma will receive the equivalent
of the minimum wage in effect in the province where the internship takes place (before
taxes). They will, however, receive support from a YMCA counsellor and preparatory
training. These internships
are 10 months in length.
- Internships for young people who have completed a high school diploma
are 6 months. The total pay for these 6 months is $8,910 or
$1,485 per month (before taxes). These interns also receive YMCA assessment services and
visits from a YMCA counsellor.
- Internships for young people who have completed post-secondary studies are
also 6 months. The total pay for these 6 months is $9,900 or
$1,650 per month (before
taxes).

Security Requirements
The host organization may require the intern participant to satisfy the
security requirements of the Government of Canada. The intern participant
must qualify for and maintain such security clearance during the
internship opportunity.
