About the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control

The mandate of the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control (CCDPC) is to provide strategic leadership in the development and implementation of integrated chronic disease prevention and control strategies and work with relevant stakeholders at national and international levels to ensure an integrated approach to chronic disease prevention and control.

The CCDPC is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Non-Communicable Disease Policy.


CCDPC Mission Statement

"The CCDPC works with stakeholders at all levels to provide pan-Canadian and international leadership in chronic disease prevention and control through integrated policy and program development, surveillance, and knowledge development and dissemination".

The CCDPC focuses on three themes:

  1. Knowledge development and dissemination - building and disseminating the evidence base on best practices and lessons learned to support chronic disease policies and programs;
  2. Policy and Program Development - supporting policies and programs that inform on comprehensive approaches to chronic disease prevention and control; and
  3. Surveillance - supporting the development of integrated surveillance systems that inform chronic disease policy.

Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control - Director General

  • Leads national and international development of integrated strategies, policies, programs on NCD prevention and control & oversees their implementation
  • Approves priorities and oversees national and international studies including broad based research to develop evidence and information on chronic diseases
  • Oversees national, cross jurisdictional, collaborative initiatives in support of integrated NCD agenda
  • Participates in expert collaboration for NCD prevention and control
  • Provides scientific and policy advice to wide variety of departmental, national and international stakeholders
  • Provides chronic disease policy leadership
  • Departmental expert in national and international fora

Integrated Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Policy Office

The Policy Office is responsible for:

  • Leading policy development for CCDPC with respect to chronic disease prevention and control through both integrated and disease-specific approaches,
  • Maintaining linkages with other governments and stakeholders on policy issues related to chronic disease prevention and control, and
  • Liaising with other policy centres within Health Canada and across the federal government.

As an internal support function and resource for CCDPC, the Policy Office:

  • Provides policy support and advice to CCDPC staff on federal policy government processes, and
  • Monitors and analyzes emerging issues related to chronic disease prevention and control.

National and International Programs Office

  • Coordination of the activities of the WHO Collaborative Centre for Non-Communicable Disease Policy
  • Development of external partnerships with Canadian and international funding agencies to secure resources for collaborative international initiatives
  • Liaison with international health agencies
  • Development of CCDPC planning and programs frameworks which integrate cross-Centre programs
  • Coordination of senior and middle management meetings/retreats
  • Development of the Director General's speeches, presentations and scientific publications
  • Centre's desktop publishing services

Surveillance and Risk Assessment Division

  • Leads the development enhancement and maintenance of chronic disease surveillance programs
  • Development of priorities for surveillance and assessment of trends
  • National surveillance strategies
  • Scientific advice
  • Conducts population health and risk assessments
  • Methods and models development for NCD surveillance and risk assessment
  • Identify directions and coordinate national for surveillance research and risk assessment
  • Business planning and management
  • National Musculoskeletal System and Mental Diseases coordination

Evidence and Information for Chronic Disease Policy Division

  • Leads the development and dissemination of evidence in support of programs and policies
  • Promote more effective use of available knowledge and science to support policy and program decision making
  • Medical, social and epidemiological research and intelligence development for NCD prevention and control
  • Dissemination and information translation and packaging of the centre's research and evaluation activities
  • Emerging research issues
  • Assesses parameters, roles and responsibilities of major multi party studies
  • Lead cross-centre analysis teams
  • Provide leadership for communication, dissemination and marketing of chronic disease information.
  • Develops evaluation frameworks
  • Utilization appropriate Information Technology
  • Business planning and management
  • National Diabetes coordination

Chronic Disease Prevention Division

  • Leads the development of prevention and screening strategies for chronic disease
  • Promote approaches, plans, activities across the continuum of health promotion, primary and secondary prevention
  • Data interpretation
  • Development of national prevention and screening priorities
  • Consultation services
  • Departmental expertise in prevention and screening
  • Manages G's and C's for prevention community programs
  • Business planning and management
  • National cardiovascular coordination

Chronic Disease Control and Management Division

  • Leads the development of integrated chronic disease management strategies
  • Develops and promotes, through collaboration, integrated national strategies, approaches and governmental intervention on management and control of chronic diseases
  • Develops and promotes funding strategies to implement management and control of chronic diseases priorities
  • Consultative service provision as the departmental authority to health care professionals
  • Monitors the uptake of innovative health care technologies in chronic disease control
  • Assesses the long-term health effects of chronic disease therapies
  • Facilitates development of diagnostic/treatment/palliative/rehabilitation practice guidelines and standards
  • Models development on coherent health care approaches to chronic disease management
  • Analyzes and models the temporal and spatial patterns of chronic disease health care and palliation.
  • Business planning and management
  • National cancer control and respiratory coordination
