This report focuses on the analyses of several national data sources to examine whether there are differences in health between rural and urban Canadians. It explores many of the disadvantages and disparities facing rural communities of Canada. It is not our intent to diminish the advantages and attractions that many rural areas offer to their residents or visitors; rather, the aim is to create a wider understanding of rural health needs and to inform and support programs and policies that will attend to these needs.

The monograph is an example of what is often defined as "descriptive epidemiology", presenting the risk of different types of cancer (defined in terms of anatomical site, and often by histological features too) according to sex, age, geography (within Canada, and internationally), and over time.



National Research Forum for Young Investigators in Circulatory and Respiratory Health

The Public Health Agency of Canada is a proud partner of the 2005 YI Forum. The YI Forum series is a major training and educational initiative of the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health and its many partners, and is co-organized with the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Manitoba. The inaugural YI Forum, held in 2004, was a huge success and was attended by more than 500 individuals spanning disciplines and research themes. The 2005 YI Forum will build on the success of the first YI Forum, on a pathway towards this event becoming a magnet for young investigators and trainees who are pursuing a research career in the circulatory and respiratory sciences.



The Canadian Childhood Cancer Surveillance and Control Program (CCCSCP)

The Canadian Childhood Cancer Surveillance and Control Program (CCCSCP) is a partnership between health care providers, researchers, consumers, provincial/territorial and federal governments, voluntary agencies, universities and organizations concerned with cancer in Canada's children. It aims to examine the implications of childhood cancer on Canada's health care system and fill gaps in knowledge about the control of childhood cancer. Its goal is to contribute toward reducing mortality, improving the prognosis, and reducing the suffering and burden of childhood cancer.

The Progress Report on Cancer Control in Canada is the first national report of its kind, offering Canadians a comprehensive overview of how Canada is doing in the fight against cancer. Its purpose is to raise overall awareness of cancer issues among general readers and to focus public attention on key issues related to cancer control and care in Canada. The report also aims to help health policy makers understand past efforts in cancer control, enabling them to apply lessons learned to better allocate health resources and to better determine the most appropriate strategies for cancer control in Canada.

This report provides information on Canadian adolescents diagnosed with cancer between 15 and 19 years of age from 1995 to 2000. Counts and rates of new cases from the Canadian Cancer Registry are presented, as well as descriptive statistics on patterns of initial diagnosis and treatment from the Canadian Childhood Cancer Surveillance and Control Program.

The report includes incidence counts and rates, in addition to descriptive statistics on patterns of initial diagnosis and treatment. and unspecified malignant neoplasms.

This report on the health of Canadian women is intended to: (i) determine the extent to which currently available data can be used to provide gender-relevant insights into women's health; (ii) provide information to support the development of health policy, public health programs, and interventions aimed at improving the health of Canadian women; and (iii) serve as the basis for further indicator development. The report provides information and descriptive statistics on determinants of health, health status, and health outcomes for Canadian women.

This is the first report comprehensively describing NDSS. It covers:

  • the original concept of using health care administrative databases to track disease burden in a population;
  • studies that have demonstrated the feasibility and validity of the concept;

The report provides information on key areas of program performance, including participation in cervical cancer screening, specimen adequacy, cytology results, and incidence and mortality of cervical cancer.
