Choosing the Right School for You

September 2004
By: Filsan

One of the most stressful times of my high school career came when I was told I had to start filling out applications for university. I remember being completely overwhelmed at the possibilities! Luckily, I was prepared. Although, your high school will try to make the decision-making and application process go as smoothly and painlessly as possible, it is also important that you get some initiative and try to do some things on your own.

Some Tips:

  1. Collect information... you can never have too much!
  2. Get organized. It is a good idea to use some sort of system that can help you keep track of important dates such as deadlines and information seminars.
  3. Do not be intimated about contacting the schools, they love hearing from perspective students.
  4. Ask questions. That year I almost became a fixture in the guidance office. I never knew until then how knowledgeable Guidance Councillors are. Their insight and experience can really come in handy.
  5. Last but not least, RELAX! While it is important that you make a good decision, you have to keep in mind that you are not stuck with it for the rest of your life. If you do realize that you are in the wrong school or program, no worries! It is never too late to change programs or transfer.

I hope that this advice will help you in some way. University or college is a very exciting experience and the process of picking your school or program is an important part of that experience. Take it seriously, but at the same time, do not take it TOO seriously. Finally, remember that you have a solid network of support within your high school, if you feel too overwhelmed, do not hesitate to talk to your councillors. I cannot stress enough how valuable they can be. With that said, happy hunting and good luck!
