Youth Making a Difference!

February 2005
By: Jasmine

Here in London, Ontario you wouldn?t think of homelessness as really a big issue, but for ten youth it is something that they worry about everyday. The Flying a Sign Project, funded by HRSD is a skills link project designed to provide us with employable skills. While giving us the skills we need to secure a job, we are working on something so huge that this project seems just like the beginning to something on a larger scale that we didn?t understand at the beginning, maybe not even now.

We first started out, coming to work everyday not knowing how big this would really get or the hard work that was ahead. Slowly as we came out of our shells and began to write passionately, we each discovered that we were writers and we all had something to say. The middle of the project proved to be tough. We now had lots of writing practice and now we needed content for the book. Now we needed to be creative as well. We worked hard and fast to create the book and even on our deadline day, the 24th of December, we were working hard to add the finishing touches to our masterpiece.

Now, we have finished the book and we had our book launch on the 28th of January, and it was a huge success. Along with many community agencies, Joe Fontana dropped by to celebrate with us. The book launch was held at the Arts Project, a place where local artists can rent space. Many works of art that didn?t make it into the book was showcased at the launch in many interesting ways.
