Same Sex Marriages
December 4, 2002
by Breanne, Manitoba - Encounters with Canada
Canada is a country where we are free; free to speak our minds, choose our own government, our way of life and practice our own beliefs in religion. Yet, our country is still hesitant to allow the legalization of same sex marriages.
It is a subject that is often avoided in Canada due to the nature of the topic. It is also an idea that a lot of people disagree with and fight against. We may disagree with the ideas of other religions for an example but we learned from WWII how prejudice or racism can cause such destruction and heartache.
In Canada, we have the freedom to believe and live as we wish as long as it doesn't interfere with the lives of others. We may not agree with the way people live, but under our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, everyone has those rights in all cases. Shouldn't the same be granted to the people who wish to have same sex marriages?
It is a violation of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms to disallow the legislation of same sex marriages. All Canadians no matter what their religious beliefs, race or sexual orientation are entitled to the same rights.
