Healthy Images goes digital

By Gina-Marie Becker, Senior Marketing and Communications Officer, Partnerships and Marketing Division, Health Canada

sampleThe warm and compelling images presented on this page are more than just pretty pictures. They also convey important health messages at a glance, much more effectively than text. This is the idea behind Health Canada's new Healthy Images: Focus on Children compact disc, which groups may borrow without charge from the department.

Focus on Children, the first in a series of Healthy Images CDs, is a collection of 96 colour photographs and illustrations portraying positive and healthy activities. The images show children, teens and their parents using equipment, clothing and physical environments safely, practising sun safety, and employing appropriate skill levels and supervision.

Sample 2 The CD builds on the Healthy Images checklist described in Issue 7 of CHIRPP News. The checklist provides clear and consistent direction for the way activities should be depicted in drawings, photographs, film and video. Health Canada shared the checklist with many partner organizations and contractors, and, as a result, received many requests to borrow images from the department's collection.

The images may be used free of charge, with prior permission from Health Canada, for health promoting and non-commercial purposes only. Groups must credit Health Canada when they use an image.

CD cover The digital files are presented in Kodak format to accommodate various users, applications and formats. Files can be accessed using graphic packages such as Corel Paint, Corel Draw or Adobe Photoshop. The CD includes detailed instructions.
