Jackie Barrett's Story

When Jackie Barrett was two years old his parents were given heartbreaking news that would change their lives forever. Their perfect little boy was diagnosed with autism. For 13 years, Jackie and his family struggled to find his place in the world. School was near impossible. Teachers became frustrated with his inability to focus and children teased him every day. He was depressed and lonely. The family was deeply concerned. Something had to change. That's when a friend suggested they contact Special Olympics Canada. Again, their lives changed forever. Almost immediately, Jackie's health and fitness improved. He found friendship in others, confidence in his own abilities and an unbelievable drive to do better.

Today, Jackie holds his head high and participates fully in society. He is one of only five people in North America with autism to graduate from University. He was the 1999 Special Olympics Power Lifting Champion and he holds the Canadian record for power lifting. Jackie is more than a young adult with autism. He is more than an athlete. He is a whole person.
