AGENCY EXTENDS PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON SEED REGULATORY FRAMEWORK PROPOSAL

OTTAWA, December 2, 2006 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is extending the public consultation period on its Proposal to Facilitate the Modernization of the Seed Regulatory Framework from December 2, 2006 to February 28, 2007 to allow more time to gather public input.

The CFIA is pleased to note the high level of interest demonstrated by the sector in the consultation, and as such, the CFIA has decided to extend the 60-day period to enable the full engagement of all interested parties. The public consultation includes both a Web-based workbook and meetings with stakeholder groups. A link to both the on-line and printable PDF versions of the workbook is available on the CFIA’s Web site at: www.inspection.gc.ca.

The Proposal to Facilitate the Modernization of the Seed Regulatory Framework has been developed with engagement of producers and other stakeholders. The proposal includes the establishment of new permanent consultation mechanisms, some modifications to the Variety Registration System and a call for participants to identify issues. Overall, this proposal is designed to facilitate ongoing dialogue among stakeholders as well as between stakeholders and government, to enhance the predictability of the regulatory process for producers and stakeholders, and finally, to contribute to the competitiveness of the sector.
