Geographic Information Systems for Transportation (GIS-T)

A GIS is a collection of computer software, hardware, data and personnel used to store, manipulate, analyze
and present geographically referenced information.

Maintain and develop data in support of the Department's GIS-T requirements

Prepare maps and atlases.

Maintain roadway inventories

Conduct GPS data collection services
-
Maintain the Prince Edward Island portion of the National Road Network

Promote and foster GIS within the Department.

Key Programs and Services

GIS-T provides the Department with highway network maps depicting various types of information relevant
to the Department's operations. Future link to online maps.

A Provincial Road Atlas is also produced at a scale of 1:50 000.

Highway inventory data is field collected and managed within the GIS-T. Accurate measurements of
provincially maintained roads are referenced in these documents.

Centerline mapping of all the roads on Prince Edward Island is maintained on a yearly basis in accordance
of the National Road Network program of Natural Resources Canada. Information and digital data
can be downloaded here at no cost.
