August: Gets Better Every Year

August 2005
By Kaylynn

The month of August plays a big part in my year. Regardless of what bad things may happen, I always get to look back on what I did that summer and the great memories of friends, family, and good times I had in my community. Every August is different but this year I definitely have some great expectations for what's in store.

August is the perfect month for me: school's out, time to spend with friends, and making some extra moola with a summer job. But what really makes my month is the time I spend out in the community.

Every August we have two big events: Scallop Days and the Bear River Exhibition. Growing up in this little town in Nova Scotia (where there is just a small "mall" if you want to call it that, and no movie theatre for km's or things for youth to do) makes me really appreciate this and the time I get to spend with my friends.

I always have a memory, whether its hanging out all day in town with friends watching the scallop shucking contests or the fireworks, or walking to the exhibition to see the horses and four-wheeler pulls and grabbing a hot dog while I'm at it. Regardless, I know I get to share this with my friends and have a good time all together.

This is really how I'd love to spend my summer and the rest of the year if it was possible. It's so much nicer being out, having fun in town with friends and meeting new people rather than sitting home playing video games and watching TV. I'd really love to see more youth out doing this kind of thing and getting to have the memories I have because I know that it's worth the effort and so much more.
