Understanding the Language of the Public Service

December 2003

Are you not yet familiar with the language used in the federal public service? Take a few moments to check out these terms currently used in the hiring process. You'll see how simple it is!

Indeterminate position: This is what is commonly known as a permanent position, one that is not for a set period of time.

Specified-period position (often called a term position): This is a position available only for a certain period, generally indicated in the job offer. These positions often provide the same benefits as indeterminate ones.

Temporary position: Position available for a brief period. Employees filling these positions are not usually entitled to fringe benefits but do have a chance of building up experience and becoming known.

Competition: Process for filling a position.

Statement of qualifications: The statement of qualifications is an important component of the selection process. Most of the time, a link will appear at the bottom of the job offer, under the deadline. Click on this link and you can check the statement of qualifications. It contains the main criteria with respect to education, language requirements, experience, knowledge, abilities and personal suitability for the position.

The statement of qualifications is important. It is used to decide which applicants to retain for later stages in the selection process. Consult Looking for a Job? for further information.
