Rising Tuition Costs
September 2004
By: Erin
"To work or not to work?" That is the question?
With the ever-rising costs of tuition many students are struggling to pay tuition fees, the cost of books, and any other associated costs of going to university. This is beginning to be a problem because many students can no longer focus merely on their studies but are holding down a part-time position(s). Most work for minimum wage, to try and afford classes and in turn can no longer spend as much time studying and learning.
Last year in second term, for the first time since I was 15, I quit work to focus on my studies. I wanted to see how much I could improve my grades. So, without a job as a distraction I set myself to studying and really getting into my classes. I raised my grades approximately 10% from the high 70's to high 80's. It is amazing what a little extra time studying can get you.
Unfortunately with my tuition costs having increased 19% for the fall, I cannot even cover tuition for the year from the money I saved working full time this summer. So, I am forced to work part time, as I am not eligible for student loans.
Many other students are in the same position that I am in. Many people tell you that recruiters look for more than just grades. I however am sceptical. I see the top percentage of individuals in my college having positions at firms well before their first term even before their fourth year is up.
I am working on my second degree and in two years when I am going to be in my last year, I wish I could say that I have the confidence that one of those company's will look at recruiting me, despite the slightly lower grades. I hope potential employers take into consideration the fact that I had to work during school to pay tuition. I am not too hopeful, but at least I can pay for tuition for now.
