Mementos of Halloween

October 2004
By: Gina

Remembering Halloweens of the past is what I'll find myself doing this Hollow's Eve. The last day of October always brings me back to the days where I could still trick or treat without getting weird glances or being chaperoned. Looking back, I think of all the chilly October nights, with the most essential thing about Halloween, the costume. I would spend countless minutes perfecting the "best costume I've ever had".

With not even a foot out the door, my mother orders me back in to put on a heavy coat. I reluctantly put on the coat over my costume, but when my mother suggests putting it under my costume, I agree. Not knowing I'd automatically become a bloated version of my costume. Or maybe when I took the time making the most original costume and parading it all across the streets, only to have a curious neighbour abruptly shatter my self esteem and costume making skills by asking "And what are you suppose to be?" But not to worry, I'd always drown myself in the abundance of candies and chocolates collected throughout the night.

And of course, Halloween without the candy would be Halloween without the "ween"! (Hallow, would be my stomach without the candy!) The wonderful, wonderful candies! That one night was where over-indulging was allowed, and only if my parents checked the candies before. But now the difference is that I can check my own candy and although I've grown out of trick or treating, and out of my most beloved bunny costume, I can still spoil myself with the sweet memories of my younger Halloween days.
