Racial Profiling of Canadians by U.S.

December 3, 2002
by Anthony, Nova Scotia - Encounters with Canada

Racism LogoSince Sept. 11th, the world has heightened its security against suspected terrorists. This has been very beneficial for the well being of the world's citizens. That is to say the world's Caucasian citizens.

The U.S. recently enacted a policy to use racial profiling on Canadians crossing the border. I find this to be disgraceful. Not only is it encouraging the "singling out" of minorities (especially of Arab descent) but this is what can lead to the outbreak of unbridled racism similar to the treatment of African-Americans in the 50's and 60's. Racism of that caliber in this day and age could tear a country or even a continent part. No one has even considered the impact this could have on children of today. Do you want your child brought up in a world where someday even entering a busy building downtown can be hassle?

This isn't to say that Canada and its people are completely innocent. One event that comes to mind is the FLQ crisis in which a government official was kidnapped and killed by terrorists. It's no excuse to stop a person of Arabic descent because they look suspicious. Arabs have never had it easy in the social order of the world. Many stereotypes of warmongers and violence have followed them throughout history.
