Public Service Health Bureau

The Public Service Health Bureau promotes and ensures the health and safety of the employees of the Government of Canada. On behalf of the Treasury Board Secretariat, the Public Service Health Bureau delivers the Public Service Health Program to over 125 federal departments and agencies representing over 250,000 federal government employees across Canada.

Public Service Health Program services include:

Occupational Health:

  • advisory services to Treasury Board on occupational health and safety matters
  • advice and consultation to Public Service managers
  • occupational health assessments for Public Service employees in high risk jobs such as health care workers, firefighters, lighthouse keepers, divers, accident investigators and federal government employees posted overseas
  • ongoing development of the Occupational Health Assessment Guide (OHAG)

Workplace Investigations:

  • investigations for physical, chemical and biological hazards, including recommendations for remedial action and follow-up testing
  • workplace surveillance and assessments including work site testing, health-related job hazard analysis, industrial hygiene surveys and advice

Health Education and Training:

  • customized training and information for Public Service employees at all levels
  • educational forums to meet the needs of individual organizations on topics as diverse as ergonomics, the health effects of noise and the sun, and respiratory protection

Communicable Diseases:

  • immunization and screening
  • individual health counselling

Office Ergonomics:

  • assessments for individuals with medical conditions
  • group education on the prevention of musculo-skeletal disorders
  • setting up internal ergonomics programs including training to departmental representatives

Emerging Health Issues

  • response to emerging health issues affecting the workplace, such as SARS, Avian flu
  • advice and consultation to federal departments on emerging issues.
