Warning regarding use of SKIN-CAP shampoo and spray

OTTAWA - Health Canada is advising consumers who use Skin-Cap shampoo and spray which is used to treat dandruff and psoriasis, to consult their physician. Skin-Cap is manufactured in Spain by Cheminova Internacional S.A. and is distributed in Canada by Advanced Dermatologicals. This product has been approved for sale in Canada only as an antidandruff preparation but has been found to contain the prescription drug clobetasol, a potent corticosteroid, and could pose a risk to individuals who use it without the advice of their physician.

Health Canada is recommending individuals using Skin-Cap contact their physician. Consumers who have been using Skin-Cap or other topical corticosteroids for several months should not abruptly cease use of this product without consulting their physician.

Corticosteroids applied to the skin can cause thinning of the skin that can lead to permanent scarring, secondary infections, signs of Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycaemia, and glucosuria. These products should be used with caution on lesions close to the eye because they may cause increased intra ocular pressure, glaucoma or cataracts. Children are at a greater risk than adults when treated with topical corticosteroids.

The Canadian distributor has voluntarily stopped sale of Skin-Cap in Canada.

Health Canada is issuing this warning to advise consumers, the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Dermatological Association and the provincial ministries of health that this product has been analysed and found to contain an unauthorized and potent ingredient.
