Health Canada advises Canadians about hazards related to the use of roll-on depilatory wax
OTTAWA - Health Canada is advising Canadians about hazards related to the use of roll-on depilatory wax. Recent incidents in the province of Quebec have revealed a risk of severe burns resulting from the use of these products. At the request of Health Canada, Summum Beauté International (the manufacturer of the Epil-Derme products) has voluntarily recalled the affected products. However, in order to ensure that Canadians are adequately protected, Health Canada is also issuing this advisory.
The products of concern, which are normally heated in a microwave oven, are listed below and typically consist of depilatory wax in a cylindrical roll-on applicator. In some instances, severe burns have resulted when hot wax has gushed from the roll-on applicator. Health Canada has determined that, as labelled, these products can not be used safely and has requested Summum Beauté International to halt sale.
Summum Beauté International, Affected Roll-On Depilatory Wax Products:
- Epil-derme roll-on applicator microwavable
- regular wax
- algae wax
- sensitive areas
- lavender wax
- lavender wax kit
- Personnelle roll-on applicator microwavable
- Option+ roll-on applicator microwavable
These products were primarily sold in Quebec. However, they were also distributed in eastern Ontario and New Brunswick. Health Canada is recommending that consumers in possession of the affected products immediately stop using them.
