Life Brand Olive Oil recalled

OTTAWA - The Health Protection Branch (HPB) of Health Canada is advising Canadians of the recall of lot number 3648 of Life Brand Olive Oil  (GP 00532584), a product sold as a treatment for the relief of occasional constipation and/or dry skin.  The product, manufactured by Laboratoire Valmo Laboratory and distributed exclusively through Shopper's Drug Mart/Pharmaprix stores under the Life Brand tradename, is being recalled because it may be mislabelled and may contain castor oil.

The affected lot is sold in 100 ml bottles with an expiry date of April 2003.  It has been distributed across Canada.

Use of the product at the dosage recommended on the incorrect label may result in abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, and diarrhea and may pose a health hazard to certain individuals, specifically pregnant women, the elderly, and cardiac patients.  Individuals sensitive to castor oil who use the mislabelled product topically may also develop a skin reaction.

A recall of the affected lot has been voluntarily initiated by the distributor to all retail outlets of Shopper's Drug Mart and Pharmaprix, following the discovery of the mislabelling.  Consumers who have purchased the affected lot should stop using the product and return it to the place of purchase for exchange or refund.  For more information consumers can call 1-800-361-3808.

HPB is continuing its investigation.  To date, no adverse reports have been received concerning the affected product.  Individuals with medical concerns should seek advice from their physician.
