Warning against Certain Rigo MAM Pacifiers

OTTAWA - Health Canada today warned Canadian consumers that two models of Rigo MAM pacifiers could be dangerous to small children.

The pacifiers of concern are models 2050 and 2051 Rigo MAM Classic Pacifiers. They are "knob-like" pacifiers (without handles), and were sold across Canada in either one or two unit packages.

These Rigo MAM pacifiers can break into two pieces, causing a potential choking hazard. No injuries were reported to Health Canada regarding these pacifiers. Parents and caregivers are urged to stop using these models immediately. Richards Packaging Inc., the Canadian distributor of the Rigo MAM pacifiers, is offering a free replacement. Consumers should contact Marie-Josée Glaude at 1-800-285-9626.

The Health Protection Branch of Health Canada is monitoring the effectiveness of this voluntary recall. Rigo MAM pacifiers models 2055, 2056, 2058, 2059, 2061, 2065 and 2180 are not affected by this recall.

If you have any questions, please contact the nearest Health Canada, Product Safety office.

Pacifiers: Safety Reminders

Health Canada reminds parents and caregivers to take the following precautions if a child uses a pacifier:

  1. Never tie a pacifier around a child's neck. Children can strangle when cords are tied around their necks.
  2. Examine the pacifier often: give a strong tug on the nipple to make sure it is firmly attached.
  3. Throw a pacifier away immediately if the nipple changes colour or texture, or becomes sticky, cracked or torn.
  4. Pacifiers should be replaced after two months of use, regardless of whether wear and tear is visible to the naked eye.
  5. Keep a closer eye on the pacifier if the child is on medication - the child's saliva could degrade the rubber of the nipple.
