Warning against Certain Irwin Wooden Blocks

OTTAWA - Health Canada today warned Canadian consumers that the "52 COLOURED WOODEN BLOCKS" set manufactured by Irwin could be dangerous to small children.

The wooden blocks are suitable for 1 1/2 to 6 years old but contain two small pieces that present a choking hazard for children under the age of three. The two pieces are blocks in the shape of a column and a pillar measuring 4,5 cm (1 5/8 inches) long. Parents and caregivers are urged to remove and throw away these blocks. Recently, a young child had a block stuck in his throat, but fortunately was not injured.

Irwin has initiated a voluntary recall of these wooden blocks which do not meet government safety standards. The Health Protection Branch of Health Canada is monitoring the effectiveness of this recall.

Parents and caregivers are reminded to select toys suitable for the child's age group. Toys with small parts are dangerous for children under three years. Keep them out of reach.
