Ministers announce Chair and Councillors of Health Council

OTTAWA - The Honourable Anne McLellan, Federal Minister of Health and the Honourable Colin Hansen, British Columbia Minister of Health Services, on behalf of participating federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Health, today announced the Chair of the Health Council and 25 councillors.

Michael Decter, who was selected unanimously by participating Health Ministers, will serve as Chair. Health Ministers are confident that Mr. Decter, a highly respected health care policy commentator and administrator, working with the councillors who bring together diverse perspectives and a wealth of expertise, will successfully fulfil the mandate for the Health Council set out by First Ministers.

The establishment of the Health Council was a key commitment of the February 2003 First Ministers' Accord on Health Care Renewal as part of their efforts to improve accountability within the health care system. This decision has been widely supported by the public and health care stakeholders.

The Health Council will have a mandate to monitor and make public reports on the implementation of the Accord. In addition to its independent Chair, it will have a government representative from each participating jurisdiction and 13 expert/public representatives. The Council will collaborate with Quebec's Council on Health and Welfare. Alberta is not participating in the Health Council.
