Minister McLellan announces $2 million in funding for nursing projects
TORONTO - The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Health, today announced
over $2 million for projects aimed at recruiting and retaining nurses, and strengthening
the Canadian nursing workforce.
The money will support initiatives that will contribute to more effective use of the nursing
workforce and promote improvements in the education of nursing students and the professional
development of practising nurses. It will also contribute to developing nursing leadership;
refine, test, and implement workplace health indicators; examine the reasons students drop
out of nursing schools; disseminate nursing "best practice" guidelines; and create and
test a human resources planning framework to establish and predict the nursing needs of
Canadians.
The funding will be provided to nursing associations, other non-governmental organizations
and researchers. Some of the money will be used to investigate the implementation of the
recommendations of the Canadian Nursing Advisory Committee (CNAC) on how to improve working
conditions for nurses. Most of the initiatives are in response to the CNAC recommendations.
Minister McLellan made the funding announcements during a meeting with nursing leaders.
The discussion focussed on the CNAC recommendations, and those found in Learning from
SARS - Renewal of Public Health in Canada, the report of the Advisory Committee on
SARS and Public Health, chaired by Dr. David Naylor.
