A. Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS)
Strategic outcome - The Government of Canada's goal is to become a model of environmental excellence in its own operations. In support of this government-wide goal, PWGSC committed to ensuring that the principles of sustainable development are reflected in PWGSC's role as a provider of services to other government departments, as a custodian of real property, and in its own internal operations.
PWGSC has also been tasked with providing leadership to make rapid progress on greening government operations, working closely with Treasury Board Secretariat, Environment Canada, National Defence, Natural Resources Canada, and other departments.
Approach - PWGSC tabled its latest Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) in Parliament in February 2004, in compliance with the Auditor General Act, which requires that SDS updates be completed and tabled in Parliament every three years.
Goals - PWGSC's goals in the most recent SDS are:
- to green PWGSC's operations as a custodian and provider of facilities and common-use office space to federal departments;
- to green services provided to federal departments and agencies as a common service agent;
- to green the department's internal operations; and
- to provide national and international leadership in the greening of government operations.
In keeping with the Department's leadership role in this area, PWGSC is working with Treasury Board Secretariat, Environment Canada, and other departments to develop a consistent, government-wide approach to greening government operations, including the development of acommon government-wide performance management framework.
