HMCS Fredericton diverted to Africa to assist RCMP

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Fredericton found herself operating off the coast of Africa last May to provide assistance to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police conducting a one-of-a-kind police operation, seizing an impressive 22.5-ton shipment of hashish directly from the hands of its suppliers, intended for the Canadian market.

Fredericton and its crew, expecting to come home at the end of April after a six-week deployment, crossed the Atlantic Ocean and assumed the delicate task of ensuring the safety of police officers involved in this counter-narcotics operation. The ship was also used as a command post throughout the operation known as Project “Chabanel”.
