Clinical and Analytical Radiation

Clinical radiation focuses on the medical application of ionising and non-ionizing radiation. For example, x-rays, electric and magnetic fields, and ultrasound are used to diagnose illness, treat various medical conditions, or monitor pregnancy. Analytical radiation refers to radiation that is used for non-medical purposes. For example, x-ray equipment can also be used to scan baggage at airports or to determine the composition and structure of materials.

As with all forms of radiation, there are benefits and risks associated with its use. A cautious approach should therefore be taken.

Health Canada's role:

Health Canada

  • provides safety inspections of federally regulated facilities containing radiation-emitting devices, the devices themselves, as well as training on the proper operation of the devices
  • conducts research on the safety and risks of using these devices
  • develops regulations and guidelines to reduce radiation risks to patients, users, service personnel, and the general public
  • provides radiation advice to government departments and agencies, industry, and the general public
