Research on Ethics

The Canadian public is becoming increasingly concerned about research involving humans, particularly when that research concerns health and healthcare. The need for research in the ethics of health and healthcare services has, therefore, never been more apparent. CIHR Ethics Office is engaged in efforts to develop a strategic research plan in ethics, in fulfillment of one aspect of its mandate.

The Douglas Kinsella Award for Research in Bioethics is an example of a successful initiative to increase capacity in research on ethics. Starting in the fall of 2004, the award is offered annually to the highest ranking candidate who applies to the Doctoral Research Award competition, whose research focuses on ethical issues related to health and/or health research and who is ranked highly enough to be approved for a regular CIHR Doctoral Research Award or a Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Award. This initiative is a collaboration between the Ethics Office and the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA).

The Ethics Office is dedicated to identifying and developing collaborations with other CIHR institute(s), branch(es) or office(s), funding organizations and stakeholders to enhance the availability of funding for its own strategic initiatives or that of others. One such initiative is with the Institute of Aging on Ethical Issues in Research Related to Older Adults.
