Strategic Priority: Aboriginal Communities

photos depicting the 5 priorities

The RCMP has had a long and productive history of service to First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities across this country, and has worked to build relationships with the more than 600 Aboriginal communities served by the RCMP.

In line with its priority to build stronger Aboriginal communities, the RCMP is committed to working collaboratively with the communities, partners and stakeholders and with Aboriginal organizations.

The primary outcome of the RCMP Aboriginal strategic priority is to contribute to the health and safety of Aboriginal communities. This will be achieved by developing community capacity to prevent crime through social development, the ongoing delivery of culturally appropriate policing services and ongoing consultation and collaboration with the communities to ensure their needs are being met.

The RCMP will:

  • promote a culturally sensitive approach to its policing services
  • invest in/optimize research for policy development
  • examine existing mechanisms (internal and external) for capturing data pertaining to our service to Aboriginal communities to achieve data quality and integrity. Continually seek improvements to enhance our ability to gather intelligence and thus to serve these communities
  • improve service delivery within Aboriginal Policing service line
  • demonstrate value for service – satisfy our partners and stakeholders through sound stewardship and rigorous accountability, as noted in the detachment performance plans built in collaboration with the local Aboriginal community
  • promote/profile Aboriginal Policing services through systematic communications and marketing
  • promote use of restorative processes – ensure that alternative criminal justice initiatives for Aboriginal people are considered as key policing options/services. As an organization, the RCMP will work with other stakeholders to continue to build momentum around this approach
  • build new and strengthen existing partnerships
  • offer courses and other learning opportunities to Aboriginal police executives and police officers at the Canadian Police College
  • communicate effectively to internal/external audiences
  • continue to actively recruit potential employees and police officers from Aboriginal communities
