Health Researchers for the 21st Century

Request for Applications:
CIHR Training Program Grants

D. Criteria for adjudication of proposals

In arriving at an overall rating and recommended budget for a proposed program, the reviewers will take into consideration the following factors:

  1. The rationale for and objectives of the program. Applicants should emphasize the way(s) in which the training experience to be provided by the program will uniquely prepare trainees to participate in the Canadian health research enterprise, by adding necessary capacity, providing new transdisciplinary skill sets and/or improving the quality of graduates.

  2. The research achievements, potential, and training/mentoring record of the faculty members and other instructors or consultants associated with the program. These individuals should have a stellar track record of training successful researchers and bring a mix of disciplinary expertise and perspectives consistent with the program's objectives.

  3. The innovations proposed in the program(s) offered by the training program. These should represent improvements over current practices, and may focus on the unique experiences or facilities available to the trainees in the program.

  4. The approaches that the program will use to deliver the specific elements listed in objective A8, above.

  5. The degree to which the program involves a variety of research disciplines and approaches. Applicants should explain how the training program's content/approach provide trainees with an appreciation for a transdisciplinary approach to health research.

  6. Plans for the development and dissemination of curriculum materials and innovative approaches to training. The program should, by example and through an explicit dissemination strategy, raise national training standards.

  7. Plans for recruitment of the highest quality trainees, for tracking the graduates of the program, and for evaluation of the program's performance against stated objectives. The program should have a system of self-assessment that will lead to continuous improvement.

  8. The proposed budget for the operation of the program. Evidence of strong institutional support. Other actual or potential partner contributions will be a positive factor in evaluation. Evidence of a plan for long-term sustainability of the Program beyond the term of the CIHR Training Program support (see below) must be articulated.
