CIHR Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research

Health Researchers for the 21st Century

Request for Applications:
CIHR Training Program Grants

F. How to apply

  1. The principal applicant is the leader of the proposed training program. That individual must obtain a CIHR PIN number.
    NOTE: Potential trainees will apply directly to successful CIHR Strategic Training Programs for program admission and for stipend support. These competitive training opportunities will be advertised nationally and internationally.

  2. In the first stage of the application, the principal applicant should submit a letter of intent to CIHR, no later than July 15, 2001. In a maximum of three pages, the letter should explain:
    · The objectives, location and faculty/resources of the proposed program;
    · The need for the training program;
    · Why those applying are best qualified to offer it;
    · The innovative features of the training program(s), stressing their transdisciplinary nature.
    The letter should be signed by the principal applicant and by the chief executive officer of the host institution, or authorised delegate, to denote agreement by the institution, to host the program under the terms of the CIHR program. A completed CIHR, SSHRC or NSERC CV module for each of the key participants in development of the proposal (who are expected to become key mentors within the training program) should accompany the letter of intent. In addition, applicants may request funds of up to $10 000 to be used in the development of a full application. In no more than one additional page outline how these development funds would be utilized and provide a detailed budget.

  3. A multidisciplinary review committee will review letters of intent, and those invited to submit a full application will be advised by September 1, 2001. Development grants will be awarded upon the recommendation of the review committee.

  4. Full applications will be accepted on or before November 15, 2001, and reviewed by the multidisciplinary review committee. Results will be announced late in 2001 with funding to begin Jan 1, 2002. Full applications will consist of a CIHR research module, in which the space provided will be used to describe the proposed program fully, and to address criteria 1-9 listed above, a budget module, and additional CV modules for mentors involved in the program whose CV modules were not submitted at the letter of intent stage. More detailed instructions will be supplied to those invited to apply.
