A. Objectives

The objectives of the CIHR Strategic Initiative in Health Research Training are to:

  1. Build a culture of creativity, innovation and transdisciplinary research within the next generation of health researchers.

  2. Increase the capacity of the Canadian health research community through the training and support of research talent.

  3. Encourage and enable highly motivated individuals from Canada and abroad to undertake training in health research in Canada.

  4. Support the development of innovative, effective, and competitive transdisciplinary training programs in health research in Canada.

  5. Raise standards in health research training programs nationally through dissemination of best practices and curriculum materials developed in CIHR-funded training programs.

  6. Encourage and enable highly motivated health researchers and educators to contribute to the evolution of health research training in Canada and to highlight the importance and impact of such involvement.

  7. Recognize and support excellent research training programs offering unique experiences or facilities, in order that they may attract the very best applicants from Canada and abroad.

  8. Increase awareness, through the example of CIHR funded training programs, of the need for all health research training programs to stress:
    a) Contributions of diverse research disciplines and methodological approaches to resolution of major health issues and scientific challenges
    b) Training in the ethical conduct of research and discussion of ethical issues related to the research focus of the training program
    c) Development of essential professional and personal elements such as communication, teamwork, and leadership.
    d) Development of skills in grant writing and peer review
    e) Training in effective research translation, including; identification of key "audiences"; translation of research outcomes to interested or affected constituencies, including communication with the public, interaction with policy-makers; and/or development of avenues for commercialization.

  9. Support health research training in areas where it can be demonstrated that there is a need to develop capacity.

To achieve these strategic objectives in health research training, CIHR has developed a new funding mechanism, the CIHR Training Program Grant. CIHR Training Program Grants will be awarded, through a competitive peer-review process.
