Request for Applications

CIHR Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research

Health Researchers for the 21st Century

Request for Applications:
CIHR Training Program Grants

G. Steps for Adjudication of the CIHR Training Program - an outline

  1. Applicants submit a letter of intent (LOI) (Deadline: July 15, 2001). A multi-disciplinary review committee reviews all LOIs in relation to the overall objectives of CIHR Training Program Grants and against the criteria outlined in section D above. This is a basic screen for eligibility. The degree of rigour applied to application screening at this stage is dictated by the number of applications received in relation to the funds available.

  2. Based on the recommendations of the multi-disciplinary review committee, invitations to submit a full application are made to a sub-set of those applicants who submitted a LOI. Each invitation is accompanied by the awarding of requested development grants as recommended by the review committee.

  3. The list of proposed training programs invited to submit a full application is made public.

  4. CIHRInstitutes and partners are asked to assess the training programs described in the successful LOIs for relevance to the more specific priority areas or program criteria articulated in section B of this Request for Applications. Based on a screen for relevance CIHR Institutes and partners will be asked, for each proposed training program, to indicate a willingness to commit to funding assuming that the full application is ranked at 3.5 or above (defined as "very good" or better on the 0-5 CIHR rating scale). The results of this relevance screen will not be made public but will be used by CIHR and its partners to estimate and plan around potential financial commitments.

  5. Full applications are submitted (Deadline: November 15, 2001).

  6. Full applications are reviewed by the multidisciplinary review committee. All applications are ranked according to the CIHR rating scale.

  7. CIHRwill fund the top-ranked applications until its commitment of $4M is allocated.

  8. CIHRInstitutes and partners will then fund additional programs, from among those previously identified as relevant to each of the CIHR Institutes and/or partners. For each relevant set of applications, funding priority will be given to the applications that received the highest ratings from the peer review committee.
