Request for Applications: CIHR Training Program Grants
C. Support for a Training Program
-
A CIHR Training Program consists of a group of excellent mentors/educators, accomplished in health research, who work collaboratively to offer a research training program of defined format and content to a group of trainees. Programs will be recognised nationally for: · The research excellence of the mentors, and their record of success in training health researchers. · The transdisciplinarity of the proposed training program. · Innovative and effective approaches to the training experience, which will be advantageous to successful trainees when they enter the health research workforce in Canada.
-
Training programs may involve mentors in more than one institution. Such institutional collaboration is encouraged in order to facilitate transdisciplinary training opportunities with groups that have a track record of high quality and productive research collaboration, and excellence in research training. In such cases, the institution of the Program leader will be regarded as the host institution.
-
Training programs may include some or all of the following training components: · Introducing undergraduate and professional students to health research · Leading to the awarding of a postgraduate research degree · Providing post-doctoral research training · Offering additional postgraduate research training experiences of not less than 11 months to health professionals, researchers or academics at any stage in their careers (For example, faculty training/retraining).
Clinical education programs are not eligible, unless they are intended exclusively to train health care professionals in research methods.
-
Allowable costs under a CIHR Training Program Grant (expected to be in the range of $300 000 per year) include: a) Stipends for a number of trainees, provided as a lump sum to the host institution at the beginning of the annual funding period, to be used at the discretion of the program co-ordinating committee. CIHR funds may be combined with other sources of funding to provide the greatest degree of flexibility in funding the maximum possible number of trainees. b) If the program involves more than a single geographical location, funds to support the travel of trainees and mentors between locations. c) Funds to develop and coordinate program structure, format and content. d) Funds for the development and dissemination of educational materials. e) Advertising and trainee recruitment costs. f) Other costs (including faculty time) which can be justified as necessary for meeting the objectives of this program.
The CIHR contribution towards these last four items will not exceed 30% of the total over the lifetime of the grant.
