Q.  What is the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)?

A.  The Public Health Agency of Canada is a new organization within the federal government that focusses on injury prevention, emergency preparedness and response, and the prevention and control of both infectious and chronic diseases. The Agency’s mission is to promote and protect the health of Canadians through leadership, partnership, innovation, and action in public health. It is supported by a collaborative, nation-wide network. This new focus and collaborative model ensure an effective response to public health issues.

The Agency is headed by the Chief Public Health Officer who reports to the Minister of Health. Health Canada also reports to the Minister of Health. Although separate, both organizations are members of the federal health portfolio and work together to improve and protect the health of Canadians. With the formation of the new Agency, Health Canada continues to administer the Canada Health Act, enforce health regulations, and provide national leadership on health policy.

The Public Health Agency has two pillars, one in Winnipeg and one in Ottawa, along with management, staff, and expertise all across Canada. Regional offices are located in the Atlantic Region, Quebec Region, Ontario/Nunavut Region, Manitoba/Saskatchewan Region, Alberta/Northwest Territories Region, and the British Columbia/Yukon Region. The main office for the Atlantic Region is in the Maritime Centre on Barrington Street in downtown Halifax. This Web site is maintained by the Atlantic regional office.
