Warning concerning Fun'n Fruity Playskool pacifiers

OTTAWA - Health Canada today warned Canadian consumers that the Fun'n Fruity Model 3105 pacifier from Playskool could be harmful to small children.

Only Fun'n Fruity pacifier is of concern. This pacifier has been sold across Canada since last October. Its guard has the shape of a fruit, such as an apple, a grape or an orange; a green handle is attached to the side of the guard.

Health Canada determined that the nipple of the pacifier may tear off, causing a potential choking hazard. No complaints have been reported to Health Canada regarding this pacifier. Parents and caregivers are urged to stop using Fun'n Fruity pacifier immediately. Playskool, the importer of the product, has initiated a voluntary recall on the 1 170 units distributed.

The Health Protection Branch of Health Canada is monitoring the effectiveness of this recall.

Pacifiers: Safety Reminders

Health Canada reminds parents and caregivers to take the following precautions if a child uses a pacifier:

  1. Never tie a pacifier around a child's neck. Children can strangle when cords are tied around their necks.
  2. Examine the pacifier often: give a strong tug on the nipple to make sure it is firmly attached.
  3. Throw a pacifier away immediately if the nipple changes colour or texture, or becomes sticky, cracked or torn.
  4. Pacifiers should be replaced after two months of use, regardless of whether wear and tear is visible to the naked eye.
  5. Keep a closer eye on the pacifier if the child is on medication - the child's saliva could degrade the rubber of the nipple.
