Health Canada Warns Not to Use CLI-CLA Lighters
OTTAWA - Health Canada is warning consumers not to use CLI-CLA brand disposable child-resistant lighters which fail to meet the Hazardous Products (Lighters) Regulations.
A number of the tested lighters exhibited major defects such as: sudden increase in flame height, leakage of fuel, continuous burning for more than two seconds after the gas lever was released and malfunction of the child-resistant mechanism.
Approximately one million lighters have been distributed to retail outlets across the country. No injuries have been reported to Health Canada.
The brand name CLI-CLA is stamped on one side of the metal shield and CHINA on the other side. The lighters are sold individually or in blister packs under the name Grand Prix.
Product Safety inspectors are requesting the assistance of retailers to remove these lighters from sale and to contact their distributor for instructions regarding stock returns.
Consumers in possession of CLI-CLA lighters should stop using them immediately and dispose of them in accordance with local laws.
Health Canada wishes to remind parents not to tamper with lighters in a manner that would de-activate the child-resistant mechanism. These lighters are child-resistant not child-proof. To avoid a tragedy, lighters and matches must be kept out of sight and out of reach of young children.
For more information, consumers should contact the nearest regional Product Safety office of Health Canada.
