Warning not to consume certain Smith Snack Service Ltd. products

OTTAWA - The Health Protection Branch (HPB) of Health Canada is warning the public in Newfoundland not to consume Smith Snack Service Ltd. bottled products. This includes the following products sold under the Smith Snack Service Ltd. brand name: Vegetable Turkey Soup, Beef Stew, Chili and Pea Soup. All products are bottled in Mason jars and have been distributed in Newfoundland. All lot codes of each product are covered by this warning.

Information from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada indicates that the production processes for these products can result in the survival of bacteria which may cause botulism food poisoning, a potentially fatal illness.

The manufacturer of these products has initiated a voluntary recall from the retail market. Any unopened containers may be returned to the point of purchase. Consumers concerned about their health after eating these products should seek medical advice.

HPB has not received any reports of illness associated with these products and will continue to monitor the situation.
