Potential for injury from wheel of baby trailers and strollers

OTTAWA - Health Canada today warned Canadians about a potentially dangerous combination baby trailer/stroller.

Health Canada is aware of an incident in which a four-year-old suffered a severed finger and bruised fingers when his hand became entangled in the spokes of the wheel of a combination baby trailer/stroller.

The company which manufactured the trailer/stroller is no longer in business. However, Health Canada is aware that the two-seat baby trailer/stroller, which may be pushed while walking or alternately towed behind a bicycle, was model #GW00200 manufactured by Greenwave Vehicle International. The trailer/stroller involved in the incident bore the CCM brand name and was purchased from a Canadian Tire outlet in 1996. Canadian Tire has confirmed that they have sold approximately 1500 units of this model of trailer/stroller (bearing Canadian Tire product identifier 71-5000-0.) They have now stopped selling the product.

It is possible that this model of Greenwave trailer/stroller was also distributed by outlets other than Canadian Tire, under other brand names. However, Health Canada is unable to obtain this information from the now defunct company.

Parents are advised to ensure the following:

  • that it is not possible for a child to place his or her hand near the wheel of their baby stroller or trailer while the child is properly restrained;
  • that their baby stroller/trailer is in good working order and that it is used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions;
  • that they discontinue the use of model #GW00200 Greenwave International baby strollers/trailers.
