DjEEP disposable cigarette lighters fail safety tests

Update:

On July 29, 1999, Health Canada reviewed independent lab analysis of the DjEEP lighter's child-resistant mechanism. These new test results, provided by the French manufacturer, demonstrate that, in the unlocked position, the DjEEP lighter mechanism is child-resistant as required by Sections 7.1 (2) and 7.2 (c) of the Hazardous Products (Lighters) Regulations. Therefore, Health Canada withdraws its concerns relating to the child-resistant mechanism as stated in its December 2, 1998 public announcement.

OTTAWA - Health Canada is warning consumers not to use DjEEP Brand disposable lighters. Tests have shown that these lighters do not meet safety standards as the child-resistant mechanism can sometimes unlock when the lighter is dropped, rendering the lighters temporarily not child-resistant. There have been no reports of injuries or fires in Canada to date.

The brand name DjEEP appears on the fuel release lever imprinted on the top. The fuel reservoir has "MADE IN FRANCE" imprinted on the bottom. The fuel reservoir has cigarette brand names completely covering the surface. The lighters are sold from counter-top displays. Each display holds two panels of 12 lighters.

Consumers in possession of DjEEP lighters should stop using them immediately and dispose of them in accordance with local laws. Health Canada wishes to remind parents that lighters and matches must always be kept out of reach of children.
