Population Health Mobilization: A Regional Strategy (February, 1999). This paper outlines key approaches, activities and entry points, and provides suggestions for analyzing health issues and priorities. It also identifies opportunities and next steps.

The Health Promotion and Programs Branch (now the Population and Public Health Branch) has defined its working understanding about the population health approach in the paper Taking Action on Population Health (1999) PDF. The paper identifies some of the challenges the branch and others will face in taking action on population health - as well as some opportunities for moving forward towards widespread participation. It will serve as a living, evolving resource as Health Canada focuses on putting the Population Health concepts into practice. See Section 3: Building the Population Health Approach into Our Work and Section 4: Challenges and Opportunities for Taking Action.

Toward a Healthy Future: Second Report on the Health of Canadians (1999): A complementary report - Statistical Report on the Health of Canadians (1999) - produced through a partnership of Health Canada, Statistics Canada and the Canadian Centre for Health Information, under the auspices of the Ministers of Health, was released at the same time. Between them, the two reports provide a picture of the most current information we have on the health of Canadians, and on the factors that influence our health.

Intersectoral Action...Towards Population Health (1999): This paper was prepared by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Advisory Committee on Population Health (ACPH) and is intended as a resource for those working to stimulate and enhance inter-sectoral action for health. It presents a framework for thinking about intersectoral action, discusses conditions for success, and suggests actions to support further development and wider implementation of the intersectoral action approach.

Investing in Early Child Development: the Health Sector Contribution (1999) PDF: Prepared by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Advisory Committee on Population Health Working Group on Healthy Child Development, the paper identifies key opportunities for action.

Strategies for Population Health Investing in the Health of Canadians (1994) by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Advisory Committee on Population Health summarizes what was known about the broad determinants of health. It then presents a framework, based on these determinants, that could guide development by the federal, provincial and territorial governments of policies and strategies to improve population health. Finally, it proposes strategic directions upon which the provinces and territories and the federal government could collaborate.
