Health Promotion - Perspectives on Natural Health Products - A collection
of reports from stakeholder consultations, 2001-2002
Health Canada is committed to ensuring that Canadians have access to
natural health products (NHPs) that are safe, effective and of high quality,
while respecting freedom of choice and philosophical and cultural diversity.
Further to the proposed Natural Health Products Regulations, pre-published
in December 2001 in the Canada Gazette, Part I, the Natural Health
Products Directorate (NHPD) is developing a regulatory framework that
will define NHPs and their legal status in Canada and will also outline
product and site licensing requirements, labelling standards, good manufacturing
practices, adverse event reporting, quality control, and more. The NHPD
is also compiling information about the effectiveness of various products
and determining their relative levels of safety. It is expected that this
framework will proceed to the Canada Gazette, Part II, early in
the new year.
In developing an appropriate regulatory framework for NHPs, the NHPD
has maintained an open and transparent process of on-going dialogue and
consultation with stakeholders across Canada. The reports that have been
created as a result of this consultation process are available below.
These documents outline key areas under consideration and also provide
information regarding some of the initiatives that are already underway
to gather better information about NHPs, to improve professional education
and training in this area, to provide reliable and accessible information
to people who use NHPs, and to establish the value of these products within
the health system. These reports are grouped under four central themes:
