Laws and Regulations

A comprehensive listing of international treaties as well as Canadian laws and regulations that govern the operation of the Canadian consular service. Please note that we do not provide legal advice or legal counsel.

Treaties
A treaty is a formal agreement entered into between states in order to define or modify their mutual duties and obligations. Canada has signed numerous treaties that have an impact on Canadian consular services.

Travel Warnings
If an unstable condition exists in a country, the Country Travel Report will contain advice and information. It will advise Canadians to avoid travel to the country or to a particular region of the country, and/or to leave. The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller.

Consular Fees
In addition to routine and emergency services, consular officers abroad provide specialized services for a fee, including legal and notary services and the transfer of funds.

Service Standards
We are committed to providing Canadians with effective and efficient services throughout the world.
