The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Health Canada (HC), and International Development Research Centre (IDRC) have entered into a cooperation arrangement aimed at coordinating and building upon Canada's global health research activities. Deploying distinctive strengths to increase Canada's contribution to global health research and its use:
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the new expression of Canada's investment in health knowledge production and use, is already recognized internationally for its innovative and strategic programs, demonstrated in its focus-driven institutes and cross-cutting initiatives. Through its peer review system, it can provide the mechanism to ensure that Canada's contributions to global health problems will be deployed with both quality and relevance. In addition, the CIHR features knowledge translation in its mandate - an emphasis lacking in most similar agencies.
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is Canada's principal development agency, reflecting and enacting our nation's overseas development policies in specific programs.
Health Canada (HC) through its technical expertise in the health sector, is the guardian of a health system that is envied throughout the world. Health Canada actively seeks to base policy on evidence.
International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is a unique - and uniquely Canadian - institution providing research funding and technical support directly to the developing world. It brings to the partnership an outstanding global reputation, long experience in North-South research partnerships, and a global network of relationships with research institutions.
